Tourist tit-for-tat

-

SIR – The EU has now decided to make those outside the open-borders Schengen area suffer by stepping up border checks at the time of year when people are most likely to be visiting (report, August 4).

In response, we should step up our own checks on tourists arriving from the Schengen countries, as it is this silly agreement within the EU that has allowed murderers to move from country to country unhindered. Brian Harrod

SIR – The recent delays experienced by Britons holidaying abroad in some EU member states has raised the possibility of retaliation.

I read that similar controls could be placed on EU members coming into Britain, but surely this is not the British way. Let us continue to be welcoming to our visitors (and their money).

If the delay to British tourists abroad continues, we should vote with our feet and spend our holidays at home in the future. Richard Skidmore
