Oxford chooses a swift solution

-

The winning design of a new swift tower to be built in Oxford University Parks has been chosen.

As traditional nesting sites in buildings are being lost, it is important to help the birds that are struggling to find new habitat. A swift tower is one answer to this – a tall free-standing structure, with lots of separated boxes in which swifts can build their nests.

Designed to look like a swift, with two outstretched wings, the winning design was submitted by Jonathan Wheeler from Lower Radley, Oxon. Described by judges as a bold and innovative but practical design, the colour scheme mimics nearby buildings such as Keeble College.

The competition is part of Oxford Swift City, a two-year project to improve the outlook for swifts in the city. All entries will go on display at an Oxford Town Hall gallery from Nov 13 to Jan 2.
