Australians to have their say on gay marriage

Australia’s bitter political battle over legalising gay marriage came to a head yesterday, as the government pushed ahead with a postal vote after parliament rejected a referendum – both options opposed by activists.

Polls indicate popular support in Australia for marriage equality. The opposition, along with campaigners, favour a free vote among MPS. They say a national vote will be divisive and subject gay people to hate speech.
