What will be the tactics?

In short, much the same as last season. Chelsea’s squad is still set up to defend well and hit teams on the counterattack. The signing of central defender Antonio Rudiger does give Conte the option to switch to a back four, but much will depend on the success or failure of new striker Alvaro Morata (above). The Spaniard will need to hit the ground running to convince Chelsea fans that Antonio Conte was right to dump Diego Costa.

Who looks the most exciting signing?

Morata became the club’s record signing after Chelsea missed out on Romelu Lukaku. In the current market, an initial fee of £58million looks like a relative bargain, but he is untested in England and plenty of big-name strikers have failed at Stamford Bridge in the past.

Which unknown could make a name for themselves?

With most of the club’s youngsters out on loan, it is hard to see an ‘unknown’ get the chance to shine for Chelsea this season. But central defender Andreas Christensen, who has spent the past two seasons at Borussia Monchengladbach, will hope to impress.

Who’s the one player they cannot do without?

Eden Hazard will miss the start of the season through injury, but Chelsea cannot make do without the Belgian for long as he provides the magic to Conte’s workmanlike formula. How safe is the manager? For a manager who won the Premier League title in his first season and has signed a new contract, albeit with no extension, Conte’s position at Chelsea appears precarious. Ever since he sent the infamous text message to dump Costa, there has been tension between the Italian and the club’s board. A good start to the season may see the frustrations of both sides ease, but if early results are bad, the situation could come to a head.

Who would be the most appropriate celebrity fan?

Jeremy Clarkson: love them or hate them, they simply will not be going away, so you might as well get used to them.
