What will be the tactics?

Ronald Koeman is one of the more versatile tacticians. There is no clear identity as such, his possession game far more direct than the more traditional Dutch style. He will mix it up far more and make alterations depending on the opponents. There are a few concerns his squad is not as balanced as it needs to be, with a lack of pace in wide areas obvious in warm-up games. Whatever his squad looks like, there is no more astute thinker in the Premier League. Everton games do have a strategic quality to them.

Who looks the most exciting signing?

Great goalkeepers can be worth 12 points a season. With that in mind, Jordan Pickford (right) will be under scrutiny to see if he can make the step up from Sunderland. Should he excel, there is an England place available in a World Cup season. There will also be plenty of attention on midfielder Davy Klaassen (top), the highlyrated Holland international signed from Ajax.

Which unknown could make a name for themselves?

There was a little disappointment when Koeman decided to sign right-back Cuco Martina as back up for the injured Seamus Coleman, because youngster Jonjoe Kenny is returning as an England Under-20 World Cup winner. He looks ready to make the step up for the first team. This season may prove too soon – he could even go on loan – but like Tom Davies last season, if Kenny gets his opportunity he may take some shifting.

Who’s the one player they cannot do without?

Leighton Baines is one of the older players nowadays, but there is no more likeable and professional footballer currently in the Premier League. He has had a tough few years with injuries but with a full pre-season, if Baines returns to form he will add another dimension to Koeman’s side. How safe is the manager? Koeman is safe for long as he wants to stay at Goodison Park. But he is quite temperamental and is not shy of picking a fight with his board. Longerterm, Everton will be watching events in Barcelona and noting if another vacancy is arriving soon, since Koeman tends to be on their list of targets. There is no cause for concern at the moment. Koeman is at Goodison to satisfy his and the club’s ambitions.

Who would be the most appropriate celebrity fan?

Gary Lineker: Great in the 80s, impossible to dislike in the 90s, and now ruffling a few feathers in the establishment.
