What will be the tactics?

Tony Pulis almost works with a back-six, with two defensive midfielders screening the back four, but West Brom were expansive at the start of last season. Jay Rodriguez can also play anywhere across the front three if Pulis opts for that formation in attack.

Who looks the most exciting signing?

Rodriguez has been a long-term target for Pulis and already looks comfortable at the Hawthorns. He should score 15 goals if he can steer clear of the injuries which have affected his progress.

Which unknown could make a name for themselves?

Ahmed Hegazi is already a cult hero with supporters after signing on loan and the giant Egyptian centre-half should flourish under Pulis’ defenceminded set-up.

Who’s the one player they cannot do without?

Albion captain Jonny Evans (left) could easily be playing for a top-four club and has been excellent for Pulis. No wonder they told Leicester he was not for sale.

How safe is the manager?

Pulis continues to polarise opinion among supporters but his tactical approach and vast experience are qualities that should not be taken lightly. Relegation will be avoided, as ever, but he may decide this is his final season in charge as his contract runs out next summer.

Who would be the most appropriate celebrity fan?

Andy Murray: obstinate, hard to beat, and perhaps rather unfairly denounced as boring despite being capable of mischief.
