Scott’s fruit cake found (chilled) in Antarctica

-

A fruit cake more than 100 years old believed to be from the Scott expedition has been found in the Antarctic – and is “almost edible”.

The cake, a Huntley & Palmers brand, was wrapped in paper and stored inside a rusted tin in a hut at Cape Adare, the continent’s oldest building. The Antarctic Heritage Trust, which has been restoring the hut, said it “looked and smelt (almost) edible”, adding: “It’s ideal high-energy food.”

Robert Falcon Scott died in 1912 returning from the South Pole during his Terra Nova expedition.
