SIR – You report (August 12) that the Dutch “exported 700,000 eggs to UK as they kept contaminat­ion secret”.

Here we have a prime example of why we need more home-produced food, not less. Our food safety standards are second to none.

Those extolling market forces for the future of agricultur­e after Brexit should take note. More imported food will only increase the risk of further food scandals.

The supermarke­ts should also be ashamed of their double standards, placing Lion-branded eggs in their shop windows but using cheap imported rubbish in manufactur­ed products, where we can’t see it. William Bradley
