Cabin chaos
SIR – Your report (“Airlines call for stricter rules over passengers taking drink on flights”, August 15) revealed that members of cabin crew have failed to report incidents of drunken disruption on flights. This is disturbing and raises questions about the cabin crew’s awareness of their obligations to report, as well as their faith in the system to take action.
There is a clear legislative canvas against which incidents must be reported. Airlines also have corporate responsibilities and duties to their staff. Several steps could be taken to address these problems, including implementing the new Montreal protocol. This, among other things, greatly facilitates the prosecution of offenders in the country of destination.
Finally, we must remember to view these incidents, even they are if underreported, in the context of the millions that pass through airports untroubled. Captain Mike Vivian
