County rebrand

SIR – Advertising has a lot to answer for as far as pronunciation is concerned (Comment, August 16).

The former county of Avon used to be pronounced Aye-vn, with the emphasis on the A. Now it has become Aye-vonne, with the emphasis on vonne. Tom Linton
