Shrek (2001) FILM4, 4.35PM ★★★★
With a blend of youthful adventure and arch wit, Dreamworks tell the story of Shrek (Mike Myers), a green ogre living reclusively in a forest in a country populated by refugees from other fairy tales. Particularly delicious are John Lithgow’s merrily evil, exceedingly short Lord Farquaad and some witty new twists on a bunch of old favourites including Pinocchio, the Three Little Pigs and the Three Blind Mice.
The Client (1994) BBC ONE, 11.05PM; NI, 11.35PM ★★★
One of many John Grisham film adaptations, this taut, if hackneyed, legal drama directed by Joel Schumacher stars Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones. When a boy (Brad Renfro) witnesses the suicide of a mob lawyer, the authorities try to get him to testify to take down the Mafia family in court. But the boy isn’t keen, hiring a feisty attorney (an Oscar-nominated, Bafta-winning Sarandon) to protect him.
In Our Name (2010) BBC TWO, 11.05PM ★★★
Downton’s Golden Globe-winning Joanne Froggatt takes gives a standout performance in this affecting – if laboured – drama. Suzy (Froggatt) returns from Iraq to her husband and young daughter, only to find herself traumatised by her experiences and growing more and more distant from her loved ones. Froggatt carries the film, which too often resorts to clichés in urging the viewer to consider the realities of war.
