Wartime to swingtime

SIR – I was interested by your article (August 16) about the wartime metal stretchers later converted into railings on housing estates.

The company my father worked for, William Allday of Stourport on Severn, Worcesters­hire, bought many of these stretchers and made them into garden swing-seats, sold through Gamages. Our family had one in constant use until it rusted away only a few years ago. Until recently there was also one in a field on the outskirts of Salisbury.
