Marseille mission to push Provencal above kebabs
Centre-right politicians in Marseille want to halt the rise of “migrant food” in the area and put Provençal food back in the spotlight instead of kebabs.
The council, run by the Republicans Party, recently voted to help empty shops become “artisanal” stores rather than kebab shops. Nouvedile Lachi, the owner of a kebab shop, told The Sunday Times: “I’ve heard that kebabs are a goner – I never would have bought this place if I had known.”
The anti-foreign food rhetoric, normally associated with the far-right Front National, was played down by Solange Biaggi, the deputy mayor, who said that it was part of a mission to “diversify” what is on offer rather than expunge immigrant cuisine.
