‘Bog-standard’ coffee rising in popularity

-

The days of fancy frappucinos and overpriced lattes may be coming to an end, as sales of “bog-standard” coffee are catching up with the number sold at trendy coffee shops, figures show.

Data from consumer analysts at the NPD Group show Britain’s high street specialist coffee chains, such as Costa and Caffè Nero, have increased the number of cups of coffee they serve by 21 per cent since June 2008.

But over the same period, other food companies, including fast food outlets such as Mcdonald’s and Greggs, have increased sales of coffee three times faster, at 63 per cent.

Meanwhile, pubs are now serving 18 per cent more coffee than in 2008.
