Ukip ‘yet to find a role’ after Brexit
PAUL NUTTALL, the former leader of Ukip, has admitted the party has “lost its cause and is yet to find a role” after last year’s EU referendum.
Mr Nuttall said there was “no getting away from the fact that Ukip has had a difficult year” but insisted there was still “room on the political spectrum” for the party.
Writing for telegraph.co.uk, Mr Nuttall, who resigned in June after Ukip’s poor general election result, also recommended his former deputy, Peter Whittle, to be his replacement, warning that electing Anne Marie Waters, the leadership candidate who wants to “pick a fight” with Islam, would be “insane”.
Mr Nuttall said Ukip must be a “radical” party to prosper, adding: “There is the need for a party which believes in fair but firm immigration controls, wants lower taxes and is willing to confront the issues the other parties would prefer not to talk about.”
Turning to the party leadership election, Mr Nuttall said Mr Whittle has “proven to be hard-working and loyal … bright and erudite” and was a “proven media performer” on TV programmes including Question Time and The Andrew Marr Show.
