Man found dead in tent at ‘kinky’ festival

- By Steve Bird

A MAN was found dead in a tent at an outdoor sex festival and a woman has had to be airlifted to hospital.

The man, in his 50s, and the woman in her 40s were understood to have been camping at the two-day Flamefest, a so-called “kinky rave”, in woodland near Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

Detectives and paramedics were called to a campsite shortly after 6am yesterday when the two people were discovered unconscious.

Attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful, and his death was last night being treated as “unexplained” while a police investigation continues. The woman was said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

It remained unclear what caused the pair to lose consciousness. One man, who declined to be named, said barbecue apparatus had been removed from a tent, raising the possibility the couple were overcome by fumes.

Others claimed the death may have been drug-related.

The festival, in only its second year, attracted criticism after it declared itself an event for “kinky, quirky, creative hedonists” to “explore their wild side”.

According to its website, visitors can “explore kinks” and “play within the boundaries of our common-sense rules”. There were also DJS and circus-style performers.

A police spokesman confirmed: “Kent Police is making inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding an unexplained death in Tunbridge Wells.”
