Asda bosses red-faced over Isle of White

-

 It was supposed to be an easy promotional win: Asda invited local children from the Isle of Wight to design a special shopping bag to mark the opening of its first outlet there.

However, senior staff at the supermarket were left “hanging their heads” in shame after printing 10,000 copies of the winning design...with the location spelt “Isle of White”.

The bungled bags have angered local councillors who spoke of an “awful clanger” that is “offensive to Isle of Wight residents”. Asda, which opened the outlet in Newport on Monday, has now apologised and said it would recycle all the bags.

“If they want to show that they’re an Isle of Wight company, they shouldn’t spell our name wrong,” said Paul Brading, a local council member. “It’s a foolish business mistake.”

An Asda spokesman said: “This was a genuine printing error and we’re in the process of reproducing the exclusive design to get back on sale as quickly as possible. We’re hanging our heads for making such a silly mistake.”
