Vanishing bugs
SIR – Michael Groom (Letters, August 22) asks why there are no insects on his windscreen.
This reminded me of a conversation I had with an ornithologist. We were discussing the fact that certain species of bird common several years ago had become uncommon.
He said this was mainly due to insecticides used on crops wiping out insect life. The lack of insects meant that certain species of bird were unable to find enough food.
This is also why cars are not bug-splattered anymore. Richard Acland

SIR – Mr Groom need not worry about where the insects have gone.
They have flown west and are all in my conservatory. Dr Patricia Burton
