- Lego Masters

CHANNEL 4, 8.00PM

When I was a child, the simple, unassuming Lego bricks were for building new, cool things – and letting your imagination run wild. This is the essence of this enjoyable new series, hosted by Strictly Come Dancing 2016 contestant Marvin Odoom. Each week, the pairs compete in a supersized Lego building challenge. Think of it as Great British Bake Off but swap the marquee for a “build room” and the ingredients for a million coloured bricks. “We’ve died and gone to heaven,” enthuses one contestant.

Among the eight pairs taking part are nine-yearold friends, a mother and son, and Cambridge University engineering students (surely that’s cheating?). Their first challenge is to create a banquet and chair that can hold an adult’s weight. The results are astonishing and the food – which includes crispy duck and a hog roast – looks good enough to eat.

Judging each round is Matthew Ashton, Lego’s vice president of design. Joining him this week is structural engineer Roma Agrawal, who worked on The Shard skyscraper. Together they decide which two pairs go home. So expect tears, irritation and broken structures. But above all, be prepared to be amazed by their ingenuity. Clive Morgan
