The penalties
Jail terms differ according to nature of offence
Wanton and furious driving, an offence under the Offences Against The Person Act 1861, carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonment, in contrast with the maximum of 14 years for causing death by dangerous driving, an offence under the Road Traffic Act. If convicted of manslaughter a defendant can be sentenced to life but judges can impose a lesser sentence based on the circumstances of the case, typically between two and 10 years.
