Jail terms differ according to nature of offence

Wanton and furious driving, an offence under the Offences Against The Person Act 1861, carries a maximum penalty of two years’ imprisonme­nt, in contrast with the maximum of 14 years for causing death by dangerous driving, an offence under the Road Traffic Act. If convicted of manslaught­er a defendant can be sentenced to life but judges can impose a lesser sentence based on the circumstan­ces of the case, typically between two and 10 years.
