Indians have right to privacy, top court rules

India’s Supreme Court has ruled that citizens have a constitutional right to privacy, a landmark decision that could jeopardise a government programme holding biometric data on the country’s 1.25billion people.

Privacy is not explicitly mentioned in the constitution and ministers had argued people have no absolute right to it. But yesterday’s ruling was hailed as a milestone by civil liberties groups.
