Plain marks

SIR – Perhaps the confusion over exam grades (report, August 23) would be reduced if plain percentages were used, as they were in my day.

Unfortunately, given the current understanding of basic maths, not many pupils (or, in some cases, teachers) understand what percentages are. Pamela Wheeler
