- Death Note Planes Predator

(2017) NETFLIX, FROM TODAY ★★★

 Light (Nat Wolff) finds a supernatural notebook owned by Ryuk, a demonic death god (voiced by Willem Defoe). Anyone whose name is written in the book is doomed to meet a grisly end. Loosely adapted from the controversial Japanese comic books of the same name, Adam Wingard’s rollicking high-school horror won’t please Manga purists, but it has a certain kitschy charm of its own. (2013) BBC TWO, 1.30PM ★★

 This cartoon from Disney, is set in the “World of Cars”, or so an on-screen caption tells us in the opening shot. As in Cars 2 (see Thursday), the main characters are sentient vehicles, and humans are nowhere to be seen. We are invited to cheer for an underdog called Dusty Crophopper (voiced by Dane Cook) and the plot hinges on a round-theworld racing tournament. It’s full of high-flying antics but it still feels tired. (1987) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★

 The first instalment of the longrunning creature-feature franchise, John Mctiernan’s Predator is a brainless but effective sci-fi horror yarn. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a commando leader who, while searching the Amazon jungle for terrorist kidnappers, finds himself fighting a far more sinister enemy in the shape of a murderous alien. It is high-octane fun, also starring Carl Weather and Jesse Ventura.
