Brad Pitt’s naked body left Shania unimpressed

- By Harriet Alexander

IT IS a mystery that has puzzled her fans for 20 years: what exactly was it that sparked such disdain when Shania Twain sang “that don’t impress me much”?

The singer has finally revealed the true inspiration for her song – announcing to a New York audience that it was, in fact, Brad Pitt’s naked body that she was referring to.

“I remember I had a girlfriend visiting me and it was near Christmas and we were baking cookies,” said Twain, now 51. “I was writing this album and there was a scandal of Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow where there were naked photos of him. And this was like all the rage. I just thought ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about’.” At the time, Pitt was 33 and Twain was 32.

His photos had been sold to Playgirl magazine – the actor then sued to prevent further publication.

The Canadian singer has gone on to sell more than 90 million records worldwide, making her one of the most successful female solo artists in history.

But, she clarified, she was not disparaging the actor.

“I’m like, well that don’t impress me much, I mean what is all the fuss? We see people naked every day. That’s really what I thought.

“I wasn’t picking on Brad Pitt. But that was just the association in that moment and things we make fusses about and whatever.

“Of course, it could have been any gorgeous guy.”

She actually names the actor in the song, but had never before explained that it was his naked body that sparked the “that don’t impress me much” line. Twain’s resulting song hit number seven in the Billboard charts in 1997, and the album, Come On Over, remains the second best selling album since 1991.

Twain’s long-awaited comeback album, Now, is out in September – her first studio album since 2002’s Up!
