Suspected global drugs baron fights extradition
A SUSPECTED international drug leader known as “the Sultan” has begun fighting extradition to the US.
Mohammed Asif Hafeez, 58, is accused of being a “key player” in a global “multiton” production and distribution operation, Westminster magistrates’ court heard.
The Pakistani national was arrested at an address in north London yesterday following an investigation by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Hashim Chaudry, prosecuting, said Hafeez had been active in drug trafficking since at least 1993 and had extensive contacts and assets “throughout the world”.
He is wanted in the US for his alleged involvement in the sale of heroin to DEA agents between Oct and Nov 2014, Mr Chaudry said.
He believed to be known as “the Sultan” by other syndicate members, the NCA said. Hafeez has two properties in Marylebone.
The hearing continues.
