SIR – Despite the development of information technology and the scanning of passports, the crucial monitoring of UK migration figures is amazingly still “based on relatively small-scale passenger surveys at airports” (report, August 24).

This is far worse than relying on opinion polls to predict a general election or referendum, and history has shown how inaccurate that can be.
