SIR – Charles Lowndes (Letters, August 26) is correct in calling Broad Street beautiful, but it is not the one in Oxford. According to Nikolaus Pevsner in the Shropshire volume of The Buildings of England, Broad Street, Ludlow, is “one of the most memorable streets in England”.

Presteigne, Radnorshir­e

SIR – Your Leading Article (August 25) mentioned the demolition of St Martin Carfax church, Oxford, in 1896, to speed traffic flow.

All is not lost. The pew-ends were used to panel a room in Bucklandto­ut-saints House, now a hotel, near Kingsbridg­e in south Devon. That room is now the hotel bar.
