England finished the World Bridge Team Championships in Lyon, France, with a Silver medal in the Venice Cup, writes Julian Pottage,
Bridge Correspondent. The team was Sally Brock, Fiona Brown, Catherine Draper, Nicola Smith, Nevena Senior and Sandra Penfold (non-playing captain David Burn and coach Derek Patterson).
They lost the Venice Cup final to China 107-206; in the Bronze medal match, Sweden beat Poland 137-111.
The Bermuda Bowl has gone to USA2 who beat France in a closely fought match 278-276; bronze medal winners are Bulgaria, who beat New Zealand 203-187.
Winners of the d’orsi Trophy are USA2, who beat Italy 169-145; bronze medal winners are Sweden, who beat India 144-70. In the Funbridge Transnational teams, the two thirds English team Percy, including Peter Crouch, Andrew Robson, David Gold and Anita Sinclair, lost to Mazurkiewicz 67-80 in the semi final. The Percy team went on to win the Bronze medal match against Zimmerman 102-42. In the battle for Gold and Silver medals, Mazurkiewicz beat Jinshuo 89-79. In World Youth championships, the Englishman Shivam Shah, playing in team Villa Fabbriche won a bronze medal in the Junior Teams. His partner was Christiane Bakke from Norway and teammates were from South America.
