‘River of blood’ ordeal after bottle falls through Tesco bag

-

 Tesco is investigating after a woman’s bottle of Lambrini fell through her carrier bag and severed an Achilles tendon.

Eve Weller, 26, paid £2 for the 75cl bottle at Tesco Metro in Plymouth and put it in a single 5p bag – without any other items.

After she got off the bus home, the bag split and the bottle smashed.

“At first I didn’t even feel it as I just thought, ‘Oh no, I’ve dropped the wine’,” said the mother-of-two. “I went to move my foot and I just couldn’t move. I looked down and there was this river of blood. A man stopped to look after me and was trying to keep me conscious while someone rang the ambulance.”

A chunk of glass had sliced into her ankle, through her tendon and down to the bone and after surgery, doctors said it could be up to a year before the tendon is fully healed.

Last night, Tesco said: “We take great care to ensure our carrier bags are strong and robust.”
