Look to the Cotswolds for our loveliest street

sir – You challenge readers to name a street that is more beautiful than Oxford’s high street (leading article, August 25).

The floodgates are now wide open. I suggest the high street in Chipping Campden.

Moreton-in-marsh, Gloucester­shire sir – Your challenge is easily answered. By a wide margin, the most beautiful street has to be Lord Street, Southport.

This boulevard (almost a mile long) impressed Napoleon III during his stay there – so much so that, on his return to France, he instructed Georges-eugène Haussmann to follow its example.
