Suffolk’s military history is cast into shadow

-

sir – The National Trust is prepared to spend £30 million on repairs at Clandon Park, where most of the interior of the building was destroyed by fire in 2015.

Given that the Trust is reported to be sitting on reserves of more than £ 1 billion (report, August 28), perhaps it will now reconsider its policy at Orford Ness in Suffolk. Here the iconic pagoda-style buildings, which are unique in the world, are being left to collapse.

Orford Ness itself is a site full of military history. Britain’s nuclear weapons were tested inside the pagodas and the principle of radar was established there, but all the Trust wants to do is promote the area as a nature reserve.

How can the National Trust justify its position at Orford Ness when one of its stated aims is to preserve the heritage of this country?
