Predictions and promises of political heavyweights
Thatcher
In 1987, Margaret Thatcher vowed to go “on and on” as prime minister. She was ousted three years later.
Mandelson
In 2001, Lord Mandelson gave a bizarre speech after being re-elected as an MP, saying: “I am a fighter, not a quitter.” It came after he was forced to quit – for a second time – in a row over a passport application.
Cameron
In March 2015, before the general election, Mr Cameron said he would not seek a third term if the Tories won, adding: “I’ve said I’ll stand for a full second term, but I think after that it will be time for new leadership.”
Cameron again
Speaking days before the EU referendum in June 2016, Mr Cameron said: “Brits don’t quit.”
Blair
Gordon Brown agreed in 1994 to leave Tony Blair free to become Labour party leader. But despite pledging to serve two terms, Blair would go on and win a third term, serving part of it before handing over to Mr Brown in June 2007.
