Bank cyber attacks accused extradited to face UK charges

- By Hannah Boland

A BRITISH man accused of being behind cyber attacks on Lloyds Bank and Barclays earlier this year has been extradited from Germany to face charges in the UK.

Daniel Kaye has been accused of launching attacks on Lloyds and Barclays services, and of blackmailing both of the high street banks.

He has also been charged with endangering human welfare following an alleged cyber attack against Liberian internet provider Lonestar, cutting the country off from the internet.

In January this year, Lloyds suffered a sustained series of denial-of-service attacks for more than two days, which prevented some of the bank’s customers from accessing accounts, although no money or data was stolen. That same month, Barclays managed to fend off a similar attack.

The incidents were part of a growing list of cyber assaults on British banks over the past year. Mr Kaye is set to appear at Westminster magistrates’ court to face the charges today.
