Satnav sent Palace terror suspect to Windsor Castle pub

- By Victoria Ward

A TERROR suspect who worked as an Uber driver programmed his satnav for Windsor Castle but found himself outside a pub of the same name and so headed for Buckingham Palace, where he was arrested.

Mohiussunnath Chowdhury, 26, was taken into custody after allegedly driving a blue Toyota Prius at a marked police car outside the palace last Friday.

Police said the suspect reached for a 4ft-long samurai sword and yelled “Allahu Akbar” as he was tackled by officers and sprayed with CS gas. Three officers suffered minor injuries.

Evidence taken from the dashboard camera of the car, as well as the satnav, appears to show that Chowdhury left his home in Luton at around 6.30pm after typing “Windsor Castle” into the satnav. Almost an hour later, the car arrived in Windsor but, rather than the royal castle, it stopped outside a pub of the same name.

Two minutes later, the car was driven past the Victoria barracks in Windsor, home of the Coldstream Guards, and then headed to central London. At around 8.15pm the driver arrived at Constitution Hill, not far from the Mall. He drove around in a loop before the vehicle came to a stop by a police van.

Chowdhury appeared at Westminster magistrates’ court yesterday charged with one count of preparing to commit an act or acts of terrorism. He stood with his hands clasped in front of him as he was told he would be remanded in custody. The case will be transferred to the Old Bailey, where he will appear on Sept 21.
