Girls were born for Lord of the Flies
Shock! Horror! A new movie adaptation of Lord of the Flies is to feature a cast of girls instead of boys! (I’m just surprised that Warner Bros, the makers of the film, haven’t decided to remove gender from the film altogether and present us with a group of “fluid” children.)
Critics have taken to Twitter to
slam the decision, pointing out that William Golding wrote about boys because they were “more like scaled-down society than a group of little girls would be”.
Perhaps in 1954, when the novel was published, but surely things are different in 2017?
Others say that there is no way a group of girls would descend
into such violence. To which I respond: you’ve obviously never seen Mean Girls, or gone to an all-female school.
Yes, boys can indeed be violent.
But if it’s complete nastiness you are after, then there’s no one better than a group of teenage girls.
