Roman mosaic is ‘most exciting find in 50 years’
A spectacular Roman mosaic has been uncovered during a community archaeology project.
The exquisitely detailed strip was found during a dig in a field near the village of Boxford in Berkshire.
Experts have described it as the most exciting mosaic discovery in Britain for the last 50 years.
Featuring Bellerophon, the Greek hero, riding the winged horse Pegasus, the mosaic dates from around AD380.
It was uncovered by volunteers and resident historians working with Cotswold Archaeology and the Boxford Heritage Project, just two weeks before the project was to end.
