Sony sued after mobile phone ‘explodes’

-

 A man is suing Sony for £10,000 after suffering third-degree burns when his mobile phone “exploded” in his hands.

Tom Collins, 36, was texting his girlfriend when his Sony Xperia Z2 burst into flames. The skin was stripped from all five fingers on his right hand. He has lost his job as a financial adviser and his girlfriend during the three months he has spent recovering from his injuries.

Mr Collins, from Bedford, said he feared other users were at risk: “I knew the battery had exploded. I’m surprised that no one’s been killed.”

He claims the burning phone could have set his house on fire, adding: “I dropped it and the whole carpet went up straight away. My hands were red raw but I got a one-and-a-half litre bucket of water [to put out the fire]. If I hadn’t got that it’s likely the house would have caught fire.”

He said he engaged solicitors after only receiving “generic responses” from the electronics giant. Sony has been approached for a statement.
