Wildfires forced thousands of people to flee homes across the US West during a holiday weekend of record heat. Fire crews rescued 140 hikers who had spent the night in woods after a fire on the Columbia River Gorge trail in Oregon, and a 2,700year-old grove of giant sequoia was at risk near Yosemite National Park.
