What to watch

- Doctor Foster

Last year’s debut series of Doctor Foster didn’t become a massive hit by being subtle. Quite the opposite. The outrageous plot twists were as tantalising as the sofa-chewing emotional suspense, to say nothing of Suranne Jones’s gonggarlanded lead performance. So if what you want is more over the top, heavy on the gas pedal, massed string section, marital meltdown drama, this opening episode of series two provides it in spades.

It begins a couple of years after the first series ended, with Dr Gemma Foster (Jones) receiving news that her despicable, cheating, fraudster ex-husband Simon (Bertie Carvel) is returning to live in Parminster with the woman, Kate (Jodie Comer), he dumped her for. The first thing Gemma does, naturally, is drive round to check out their swanky new multimillion-pound abode and – finding the door open (as you do) – pop in for a peek, whereupon… Well, it’s not hard to guess. But it is impossible to look away as she digs herself deeper and deeper into an almighty mess. Not least when it comes to Simon’s attempts to alienate their teenage son Tom (Tom Taylor) from her. It’s not nice, but it is utterly addictive. Gerard O’donovan
