Scientists have suggested solar flares may have been responsible for 29 sperm whales dying on UK beaches after becoming lost and trapped in shallow waters during early 2016. Dr Klaus Vanselow, from the University of Kiel, Germany, said that large-scale solar storms, which cause the spectacular Northern Lights, may have distorted the magnetic field and caused the whales – such as this one washed ashore near Skegness on Jan 25 2016 – to lose their way. The findings were recently published in the
