Organ donation

-

SIR – It is sad to see that a shortage of human organs is resulting in needless loss of life (report, September 4).

Our elder son was taken to hospital with a serious head injury. My wife and I arrived at the hospital soon after him. We were gently told that Adam had little prospect of surviving and were asked if we would give permission for his organs to be donated.

We were in a state of shock, but without hesitation we said yes. As the years have passed, we are so glad we did. Two seriously ill children, who are now healthy young adults, were given Adam’s heart valves.

Every time we think of our son we also remember that he lives on in two people we don’t know. So please, if you are ever asked “Will you donate?” say “Yes”. It will bring great comfort to you for many years to come. John Summers
