De Gaulle in England

-

SIR – Eric Clark (Letters, September 5) will find there is already a statue of Charles de Gaulle in Carlton Gardens. It is opposite the headquarters of the Free French Forces, which were opened on June 18 1940 – the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

The nation may have had its back to the wall, but we retained our sense of humour. John Kennedy
