Argos catalogue may end up in recycling bin

- By Katie Morley

THE Argos catalogue could soon be consigned to history as the store is conducting a “digital only” trial to test whether shoppers still want them.

As increasing numbers of consumers choose to shop online, Argos has confirmed that it has removed the glossy catalogues from several stores to test demand.

If the trial shows that customers are not missing the tomes, Argos could decide to pull them from every store in the UK, a move which would save it thousands of tons of paper every year. Argos is owned by Sainsbury’s, which has adopted a “waste less save more” slogan.

Most Argos stores are fitted with tablet computers which customers can use to place orders.

But despite advancing technology, it is thought that as many as 17 million households in the UK still have an up-to-date Argos catalogue at home.

Two Argos stores in Inverness are taking part in the experiment.

One customer told BBC Scotland: “Do you even realise how many hours of peace and quiet that catalogue gives to parents of young children who sit flicking through the toy section?”
