Assignment: Bulgaria on a Cliff Edge

WORLD SERVICE, 1.30PM

This edition is a classic example of what the World Service does best: shining a light on parts of the world with fascinating social issues that rarely make headlines in the UK. Bulgaria has the fastestshrinking population in the world, with empty streets in near-deserted villages that can be home to fewer than 10 people. This programme explores the particular challenges of a declining population, and what happens to those left behind when residents seek work abroad and the birth rate plummets.

Women Talking About Cars

RADIO 4FM, 6.30PM

 Victoria Coren Mitchell’s light-hearted interview show was a real treat when the first series launched last year, and its second series, beginning in this evening’s Radio 4 comedy slot, is just as unmissable. The format is like a tonguein-cheek Desert Island Discs, with female guests reflecting on the beloved cars they have owned, with a few knowing nods and warm-hearted jokes at the expense of the macho world of motoring. The first guest is actress and writer Sheila Hancock, who knows the lure of a Jaguar.
