Oblivion (2013) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★

This post-apocalyptic sci-fi film sees Tom Cruise star as a veteran assigned to extract the remaining resources from a dangerous Earth. We find out his memory has been wiped, and he soon begins to question what he knows about himself. The action sequences are of the seen-it-all-before variety but the empty, blitzed planet is majestic to behold and British actress Andrea Riseborough is superbly intense as Cruise’s partner.

Senna (2010) ITV4, 11.05PM ★★★★★

You don’t have to like motor racing to be gripped by Asif Kapadia’s shattering documentary about magically confident Formula 1 wizard Ayrton Senna. It helps that the Brazilian cuts a dashing figure, with film star looks and an almost religious approach to his sport. His rivalry with Alain Prost is well documented and foregrounded here, as is the fateful 1994 San Marino Grand Prix which cost Senna his life.

SONY MOVIE CHANNEL, 11.30PM ★★★★ The Game (1997)

Michael Douglas transfers some of the steeliness he showed in Wall Street to the world-weary banker Nicholas van Orton, who finds his life taking unexpected twists after he is thrust into a mysterious realworld “game” courtesy of his wayward brother Conrad (Sean Penn). Eerily framed photography and a chilling score add to the tension of this superior thriller from director David Fincher.
