Our church doors have never been more open
sir – As Churchwarden of St Augustine’s, Queen’s Gate, I used to take it in turns with three other parishioners to keep the church open for a few hours a week outside of service times. (We are, for those who do not know, a liberal and inclusive catholic congregation with an acclaimed professional choir.)
Through a diocesan parochial reorganisation we were merged with the neighbouring parish of Holy Trinity, Brompton. We are very happy to be part of a parish that has respected our tradition – both musical and otherwise – and has loved and nurtured us.
We have many visitors at services and are often asked about William Butterfield’s splendid architecture and the church’s interior features.
In response to the Victorian Society’s remark that HTB church doors are “shuttered and barred” (report, September 3) I can assure readers that, since our merger, we are able to opens our doors far more frequently.
