Slaughter in Burma

-

SIR – William Hague is right that Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader of Burma, should speak out against what amounts to genocide in her country (Comment, September 12). However, there is only one person in Burma who has power to order the military to halt their attacks against Rohingya civilians, and it isn’t Aung San Suu Kyi.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is constitutionally independent of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government. He controls the Burmese military, police and other security services. He is the one responsible for the slaughter taking place, but so far he has largely escaped attention. This has to change. A good start would be for the UK Government to halt its programme providing free training to his military forces. Mark Farmaner
