Speaker’s corner Bercow’s promise on the Brexit Bill

-

John Bercow has indicated he will help to frustrate the passage of Theresa May’s Brexit Bill by allowing MPS a vote on difficult amendments.

The Speaker, who has admitted backing Remain, yesterday acknowledged MPS’ concerns over EU citizens’ rights and the use of so-called Henry VIII powers to allow ministers to amend laws without full scrutiny.

He has the power to make the final choice of amendments selected for debates and votes at the crucial report stage of the legislation.

Speaking at the Institute for Government, Mr Bercow said: “I have not shown myself reluctant over the years to select amendments for debate and vote which may not be for the convenience of the executive.

“Nothing is too toxic for Parliament to consider.”

Mr Bercow also said he would like Prime Minister’s Questions to last an hour rather than the current 30-minute session.
