Surgeon’s ‘face experiments’ harmed 88
♦ A surgeon who carried out “experimental procedures” on patients’ faces, harming at least 88 in his care, has been struck off the medical register to “protect the public”.
Maxillofacial specialist Roger Bainton carried out dozens of unnecessary operations while working at Royal Stoke University Hospital. He was employed despite being found guilty in 2000 of serious professional misconduct following the death of a patient at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The Royal Stoke reviewed his appointment and said it “had been undertaken in line with due process and trust policy”. It said colleagues had raised concerns about him “in a clear demonstration of their commitment to the highest quality of patient care”.
