Sifting sincere beard-growers from lazy shavers

SIR – The Home Office has raised an important question: when is a beard not a beard (“Stubble ban for border staff ”, report, September 13)?

First, we need a standard definition, covering length and surface area. Then the Home Office will need to allow beard leave for those critical days when an employee’s sincere attempt to grow a beard might be misinterpr­eted as slovenline­ss.
